It will definitely take a very long time discover every beauty this country is possessing. If you are wondering how Thai people are, they are very kind and honest people. Of course, every country has its bad and good but, I do not know why, it is very unlikely to see someone trying to do harm to you. Maybe it is because of their strong belief in their religion.
If you did not know by now, the language being spoken in Thailand is Thai. In my personal belief, it is a very difficult language to learn since the formation of sentences or words changes depending on your gender.
General Information About Thailand
Thai flag has two colors. Red represents the Thai people, blue represent Thai Kingdom and the white is for Buddhism. Bhumibol Adulyadej was the longest ruling King of Thailand, but unfortunately he died in 2016. Now, Maha Vajiralongkorn is ruling Thailand and Thai people are very keen on their kings. You can see photos of the current and former kings everywhere such as restaurants, cafes or even on streets!
Thailand has started to take the lead in tourism. In 2016, surveys showed that Bangkok was the most visited city in the world. Thailand has 76 cities in total and the 51st country in the world in terms of size. If that is not enough for you to decide to visit this great country, Thailand has 5 places in UNESCO’s World Heritage List which are Historic City of Ayutthaya, Historic Town of Sukhothai, Thungyai-Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuaries, Ban Chiang Archaeological Site and Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex.
Thailand’s capital is named Bangkok and it is recorded as the longest named city in the world in the Guinness Book of Records. Bangkok’s full name in Thai is “Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahintharayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Buriram Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit”. For Thai people, Bangkok is “Krung Thep” which means city of angels.
Thailand’s currency is called Baht. There are 1, 2, 5, and 10 Baht worth coins and 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1.000 Baht worth banknotes.
Travelling in Thailand
Everything is done. You planned your tour, got on a plane and finally arrived at Thailand. But there is still one question lingering in your mind: How to get from one city to another in Thailand?
Well, do not worry. Thailand has lots of alternatives for getting from one place to another. If you love to plan ahead of time, you can always buy plane, ferry, bus or train tickets online. However, if you are not going to take a plane to travel between cities, we recommend you buy your ticket at a ticket agency because around extra 300 Baht will stay in your pocket. There are lots of airway companies that you can use for travelling between cities in Thailand such as THAI Airlines, Bangkok Air, Thai Smile, Nok Air, Air Asia, Tiger Lion Air.
If you wish to visit islands in Thailand, you can buy one ticket for plane, ferry and bus through Nok Air and Thai Smile. Do not forget that the earlier you buy the ticket the cheaper it will be.
If you are wondering how to travel in the city, subway and skytrain works really well in Thailand. You can travel to far places without paying much. You can also take the public buses but taking Tuktuk, which is a three wheel motor where the driver sits on the front and two people at the back, is highly recommended. Tuktuk is the most common transportation vehicle you can see on the streets.
However, you have to be direct about where you want to go and say to the driver that you want to go there directly. Otherwise the driver would take you to shopping districts and try to take extra money. Other travelling alternatives are taxis and UBER. Again, be careful with taxi drivers. Whatever transportation option you choose, bargaining is essential. Always try to take the price lower.
Eating in Thailand
Thai food is very famous and it is one of the top 10 cuisine in the world. If you are planning a Thailand tour on a budget, do not eat every meal at restaurants. They are quite expensive when compared with other options like street food. Famous fast food chains are also really expensive in Thailand, for instance a Big Mac is 120 Baht which is around 4 dollars. If you are staying at a hotel did not pay too much for it, probably it would not come with breakfast. Even if it did, they will serve lots of sweet food and fruits and nothing much other than that.
You might not like Thai food. Will you starve there? Absolutely not. Even if you do not like food in Thailand, there are lots of other options which might be closer to your culture such as pizza, hamburger, pasta or red meat. There are also markets where you can buy frozen or instant meals and get them prepared for you. The most famous Thai foods are Phat Thai, Khao Phat Kung, Tom Yam Soup, Khao Phad, Som Tom and Spring Roll. Traditional alcoholic drinks are SangSom, Singha, Chang and Leo. These are just the beginning of the list.

You should not leave Chiang Mai without tasting the street food. The food counters are set up at dusk and the place is filled with a delicious smell. Even though fried scorpions and cockroaches are the most attention grabbing food for the tourists, if you are not into that you should pass and try the most famous street foods on Chiang Mai such as Pat Thai, Som Tam and Tom Yum.
